Origins and development

Burials on the present site began in June 1864 after a larger plot had been acquired. The first chapel was built in 1911; the present funeral hall followed in 1957. These grounds are separate from the old churchyard beside Bergstedter Kirche.

Origins: First burials in June 1864. The cemetery is in Bergstedt, Hamburg’s Walddörfer, at Volksdorfer Damm 261, 22395 Hamburg. Its area is approximately 15 hectares.

Design and present-day character

A church cemetery with three documented access sides, a chapel, mature trees and several coffin and urn grave options.

Read this character description together with the development of Bergstedt Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.

Distinctive features on the grounds

The present cemetery replaced the older churchyard beside Bergstedter Kirche.

The present funeral hall was inaugurated in 1957.

Documented entrances are on Bergstedter Chaussee, Volksdorfer Damm and Osterkampstieg.
